2010 Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon Selected to Host USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Regional Club Championship
$5,000 Prize Purse Offered to Regional Tri Clubs
November 15, 2009 (Philadelphia, PA) – Organizers of the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon (PHLYTRI) have announced the 2010 PHLYTRI Olympic Distance Race has been selected by the USAT Mid-Atlantic Regional Council to host the USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Regional Club Championship. Taking place on June 27, the club championship will offer a prize purse totaling $5,000.
“We are very proud that our event was selected as this year’s USAT Mid-Atlantic Regional Club Championship,” said Lars Beck, Race Director, Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon. “The PHLYTRI has always hosted a successful and competitive club challenge. With the addition of the USAT Mid-Atlantic Club Championship, we expect to see the best clubs on the East coast come out to compete. We encourage clubs and individuals to register as soon as possible as our Olympic Distance race is expected to close before the end of the year.”
At the 2010 championship, USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Regional Council (USAT-MA) will introduce a new scoring system in which clubs will participate in predetermined Divisions based on club size with individuals still scored based on Age Group placement. The new scoring system is similar to the USAT National system and will ensure fair competition for big and small clubs alike. In each Division, the Club Champion winning team will receive $1,250. The remaining purse will be awarded as follows: $750 for the 2nd place club, and $500 for 3rd place. The official scoring system will be posted at www.PhillyTri.com in the coming weeks.
USAT-MA announced the selection as a part of a two-year Regional North-South Club championship initiative. In addition to Philadelphia’s selection, USAT-MA announced Richmond (Rocketts Landing Triathlon) will host the 2011 Club Championship. The advance selection and announcement of these races permits clubs to mobilize members and set schedules to maximize full club participation. In order to participate in USAT-MA Regional Club Championship, clubs must be registered with USAT.
The USAT-MA Regional Club Championship will replace the popular PHLYTRI Club Challenge competition for 2010. The event will continue to offer clubs expo booth space, post-race celebration tents and other benefits in exchange for volunteer commitments. Taking place June 25-27, the 2010 PHLYTRI will host an entire weekend of events including the Olympic distance race (1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run) with a $13,500 prize purse, a Sprint distance race (.9K swim, 24K bike and 5K run), Kids Fun Run & Duathlon and a two-day multi-sport expo.
