Five World Champions and Large Pro Field to Race Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon
Prize Purse and Race Course Draws Stellar Field
(PHILADELPHIA, PA) In only its second year, the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon in Fairmount Park will be hosting a professional field for the Olympic-distance race to be held on June 25, 2006.
Race officials have offered a $13,500 prize purse — a first for the city — for the top five athletes in each gender. $3,500 will be awarded to the male and female champion, $1,500 to second, $1,000 to third, $500 to fourth and $250 to fifth place.
These offerings plus the race's scenic course and city hospitality has drawn an unbelievable group of triathletes and duathletes from across the globe including Ironman World Champion Karen Smyers, XTERRA World Champion Candy Angle, Duathlon World Champion Andrew Noble, ITU World Team Champion Pip Taylor, and ITU World Champion Leanda Cave. Other professional stand-outs include Memphis in May and NYC ITU Champion Greg Remaly, and Ironman Europe Champion Nina Kraft.
"Having such high-caliber professional athletes race in Philadelphia will be a thrill for the numerous age-groupers who also will race minutes behind them," says race director Lars Beck. The Olympic-distance race sold out in 14 days with 2,000 such age-group athletes. "We're confident that our pro field will love the course, the city, and how we do things 'Philly style.' The pros will start ten minutes before the age-group waves.
